Why Maintain Trees?
This question is a very important one. We all could let nature take its course, however, given most dwellings in Dunstable, Bedfordshire are in a urban to semi urban environment, tree maintenance by a specialist tree surgeon can be vital. Tree Surgery & Tree Pruning is necessary to maintain a tree in a safe condition, to remove dead branches, to promote growth, to regulate the size and shape or to improve the quality of flowers or fruit. Incorrect pruning can lead to trees becoming unsightly, diseased and potentially dangerous. Our trained Arborists can assist you in doing the job the right way.

What Is Tree Surgery?
What is a Tree Surgeon?
A Tree Surgeon, or also called an Arborist, is a professional in the practice of Arboriculture. A Tree Surgeon in Dunstable, Bedfordshire would typically be responsible for planting, pruning, felling and general treatment, maintenance and care of trees. They will have good knowledge of trees and how they grow, what diseases may affect them and how to provide a service that prevents unnecessary disease or decay within a tree.
However, much like owning a pair of scrubs and a scalpel doesn’t make you a surgeon, owning a chainsaw does not make you a tree surgeon. Tree Surgery is a particularly dangerous occupation. Therefore only qualified, experienced professionals should undertake Tree work in Dunstable. It is also important for a tree surgeon to never work outside of their comfort zone. The job is physically demanding for the whole team involved and requires skill, concentration and good technique to get right.
What is Tree Surgery?
Tree Surgery is defined as: the pruning and treating of old or damaged trees in order to preserve them. Therefore, Tree surgery is the physical act of cutting or pruning trees. Tree surgery involves:
Choosing the right tools for the job
Making suitable cuts in the correct order (and at the correct time of year)
Making accurate pruning cuts depending on the form and condition of the tree.
Ensuring the tree is able to make a full recovery from pruning by using experience and good technique.
These are all things that enable a tree surgeon in Dunstable to perform competent, safe and professional tree surgery. Thinking of the tree’s welfare and future health is essential when performing tree surgery. Hiring a “tree surgeon” without adequate training, certification or experience can result in pruning cuts being made in unsuitable places or to a poorly finished standard. This can ultimately affect the life of the tree and even the safety of the homeowner.
Tree Surgeons and their tree surgery work should be carried out to British Standard BS3998 British Standard for Tree Work. Browns Landscape Solutions LTD adhere to these standards.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to hire a tree surgeon?
Tree surgeons in Dunstable or Bedfordshire can vary greatly in cost depending on a) the type of works being carried out and their complexity (a sectional tree removal using advanced rigging techniques vs felling straight to the ground could cost vastly different amounts for the same size tree) b) the access for the work (the distance to the van for the waste to be removed or even having to take waste through a house or tight ally way) c) any obstructions in the work area (fences, sheds, greenhouses, ponds, other houses etc) and of course d) the size of the tree and proposed project. It’s best for us to visit you, provide a free quote and discuss your requirements. After which we can work out exactly how long the tree or hedge project will take, factor in any of the above points and then provide you with our quote. We always provide a written quote so that both parties are clear on exactly what work will be carried out. Be weary of any company that fails to provide a written quote.
Once you have cut a tree what happens to the cuttings?
All of the green waste we produce gets chipped on site and removed by us. We take the chippings to various local processors where they either compost it to be used as fertiliser, sell it on as mulch for borders or have it taken to power stations where it can be used as a carbon neutral fuel. We have a full waste carriers license from the Environment Agency and will happily provide you with a copy if required. You can trust that we are responsible with the waste we produce and will never fly tip.
Can I trim or cut my neighbours tree that is overhanging into my property?
Yes, you can trim a tree or hedge that is overhanging your boundary and entering your property. BUT! Don’t forget the cuttings technically belong to your neighbour, and therefore you should offer them back to them. They have no obligation to accept the cuttings which means they will be your responsibility to dispose of them. This can be a complex matter depending on your relationship with your neighbour.
If you are planning to work on a neighbours tree it’s best to agree something beforehand. If the tree needs to be climbed to carry out the work then you will need permission from your neighbour to access their tree, as it could be considered trespassing if not. We are happy to talk to neighbours and promote a good relationship if required. We will not get involved with tit-for-tat disputes though nor will be purposefully damage a tree to suit an ulterior motive.
What is the best time of year to cut, prune or reduce my tree?
The correct time to prune or reduce trees can vary depending on the species of tree involved. This is a good reason to employ a professional, local tree surgeon to carry out the works. Not only do you get the benefit of having everything done for you, but also you get peace of mind that it will be done correctly and at the right time of year. We always make sure that you are made aware of when the correct time to carry out any tree reductions are.
My tree has a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) from Central Bedfordshire Council, can I trim a few branches?
Any tree which has a TPO active on it cannot have any works carried out on it without prior authorisation from the council. Even the smallest branch would require a planning application to be submitted and approved before any works was carried out. The only works you are able to do without permission would be to remove deadwood from the tree. However it is always good practice to document what you remove to avoid any confusion and potentially a fine.
My trees and hedges overhanging a highway / footpath, is this my responsibility to maintain them?
If the tree or hedge originated from within your boundary then it is your duty to maintain tree and hedge clearance over footpaths to 2.3 meters and tree and hedge clearance over carriageways to 5.3m. The Highways Act 1980 states that trees and vegetation should not obstruct the passage of other users. We can help assist you in meeting these requirements.
